The Definition Of Writing

There are many ways to define the term of writing. Writing means expressing one’s idea, feeling in written form of language which needs a communicative competence of the writer. It involved many skills such as how to employ the grammatical forms, how to apply mechanics of writing, and how to organize or express idea or thought into written form.

According to Spratt (1995:26), writing involves several sub skills. Some of these are related to accuracy, i.e. using the correct forms of language. Writing accurately involves spelling correctly, forming letters correctly, writing legibly, punctuating correctly, using correct layouts, choosing the right vocabulary, using grammar correctly, joining sentences correctly and using paragraphs correctly. But, writing is not only about accuracy. It is also about having a message and communicating it successfully to other people.
Walker T Petty defined writing as the mental had physical act of forming letters and words. But it is more than that is putting words into sentences and sentences into paragraph, spelling word correctly, punctuation observing convention in written forms and more. Writing is a process of expressing though and feelings, of thinking and shaping experiences. (Petty: 1980:363).
