English Development in Riau Province

English is a foreign language in Indonesia, especially in Riau Province. Not all of people of Riau province know how to speak English. Just some people know English. As we know, not all of lecturers can speak English and not all of students can speak English, moreover,

common people. Even though they have learned what is and how to speak English, but they don’t apply it in everyday life. They don’t practice speaking in every conversation.  Every day and every time they just use their mother tongue to communicate and text. That’s why, day by day, their ability of speaking English is getting lost.

Based on my experience, when I was a senior high school student, I thought that English was not a very important subject. English was too taboo to be applied in daily life. Why did I think like that? Because I did not find that English is very important in daily life. I could not see that English can make us become a good person in all over the world. There was no English study club, English private class, extracurricular tutorial lessons, course, and something like that. Even thought the teacher had motivated and told the student that English would be very important in the future. But, by just telling that without applying it, it was not very support the students to be clever and to be good in English. That’s why the student thought that English is not an important subject and is a boring subject.

But now there are some progresses and development in Riau province, especially in my village. We can see that English is everywhere now. It is around us. Such as: at home, at supermarket, at the book, even in toilet. There are so many ways to learn English. Besides learning from formal class, we can learn English from informal classes such as:  English Study Club, English private class, course, and others. Even, there is internet that we can learn English widely and freely. The way the teacher teaching had little bit changed now. In the past, the teacher was just using book and tape recorder in teaching English. But now, there are additional equipments in teaching.  One of them is Projector. It’s used to show audio-visual material so that students can learn English easily. To motivate the student, there are English competitions that students are welcomed to join. And also there are scholarships for those who have high ability in doing everything with English.
